Dry needling is greatly beneficial for any form of muscular pain. The most common conditions treated are back and neck pain, headaches, knee injuries, calf cramps and stiffness, swollen ankles. Dry Needling can be used in conjunction with Deep Tissue Massage or as a stand-alone treatment. Dry Needling is extremely effective with minimal discomfort. This technique can be used with or without other therapies such as deep tissue and sports massage by our highly qualified practitioners in our conveniently located Dublin 2 clinic!
How Does Dry Needling work?
Dry needling blends the principles of Western Medicine along with the Chinese Medicine Techniques of Acupuncture for treating muscular pain and trigger points. Dry Needling is the insertion of sterile single-use Acupuncture needles directly into myofascial (muscular) trigger points. Trigger points are tight, tender knots within the muscle which cause and contribute to pain within the body. Several studies have confirmed that myofascial pain is one of the most commonly ignored causes of persistent pain. Research studies have shown that inserting such needles into trigger points causes favourable biochemical changes within the body, which release the trigger points and help reduce pain. Although Dry Needling is not based on the philosophy of Acupuncture, it uses the same type of needles and some of the same pressure points in the body. The effect is both local (where the needle is applied) and general, causing relaxation and an overall sense of wellbeing.
Please be mindful that result and reactions to Dry Needling vary from person to person. Some feel immediate relief, where some may feel the area being worked on is sore and tender for up to a week after the Dry Needling session. This is perfectly normal and nothing to be alarmed about. To Minimise discomfort we recommend using TermaCare Heat pads, purchased at most Chemists, and Hot Water Bottles on the area(s) in questions for three consectivie days immediate after your treatment.
