Let us help you find relief so that you can get back to living a full and healthy life!

What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint connects your lower jaw and skull and allows you to open and close your mouth, as well as chew from side to side. A misaligned jaw, however, can cause fatigue, spasms, and pain.

TMJ dysfunction can be caused by arthritis, injury, or teeth grinding. TMJ disorder can also be genetic. You may experience pain or tenderness in your jaw, headaches or migraines, difficulty or pain while chewing, or pain in your neck, shoulders, or behind your eyes. It may even become difficult to open or close your mouth if the joint locks.

TMJ disorder can be a painful and frustrating condition, but massage therapy can provide relief.

TMJ massage therapy treats the tension and pain associated with TMJ disorders. The goal is to relieve muscle overuse caused by teeth grinding and jaw clenching, which can lead to soreness, inflammation, and fatigue.

We have experienced massage therapists who are dedicated to making sure your treatment is comfortable, relaxing and hygienic.

TMJ Massage improves mobility, boosts circulation, reduces stress, and relieves pain

Causes and Symptoms

Some causes of TMJ dysfunction include arthritis, a jaw injury, or clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism). It can also be genetic.

Symptoms include:

  • Pain or tenderness in your jaw, temporomandibular joints, or around your ear.
  • Continual headaches or migraines, especially first thing in the morning
  • Difficulty or pain while chewing
  • Pain behind your eyes; sinus pain and pains in your neck and shoulders
  • Locking of the jaw joint so that opening or closing your mouth is difficult

Benefits of TMJ massage

A TMJ massage can help reduce muscle tension and spasms, increase mobility of the jaw, reduce inflammation, promote healing, and address clicking and popping sounds.

Improves Mobility

TMJ massage improves overall jaw, face, and neck mobility. By massaging specific areas of the jaw, neck, and face, a massage therapist can improve flexibility and range of motion quickly and without pain.

Reduces Stress

Many people feel less stressed after getting a good TMJ massage. Massages release endorphins in the body, making you feel relaxed and happy. This has an immediate calming effect on the nervous system.

Boosts Circulation

Lastly, TMJ massage boosts circulation. Increasing blood flow reduces inflammation and promotes healing, which can relieve tension and pain.

The Bodywise Clinic prides itself on being an equal opportunities employer, hiring both male and female Massage Therapists, both of which are trained to the absolute highest professional standard. Your appointment may be with a male or female Massage Therapist, depending on availability.
